Wavefront’s IoT Roadshow Offers Actionable Insights to Tech Community

Last week, the wireless technology community converged at Deloitte’s Vancouver office for the 2016 edition of Wavefront’s Internet of Things (IoT) Roadshow, presented in partnership with Sierra Wireless, Arrow Electronics and Deloitte. This year’s event built on the success of the 2014 Roadshow and featured a combination of plenary sessions as well as two tracks focused on business and technical topics.

In the opening keynote, Richard Lisa, who leads IoT Marketing at Intel, set the tone perfectly by illustrating that IoT is the biggest “thing” on the planet with $21 billion in industry acquisitions and growing. According to Richard, creating vertical solutions on a horizontal platform will build a strong ecosystem.

Following the keynote, we had a series of practical and realistic sessions that illustrated some of the opportunities in the IoT space. On the business side of things, Awesense’s Mike Rowling discussed the need to put IoT and analytics in the context of how they transform a business when it comes to monetizing IoT solutions. On that note, Andrew Harries, Chairman at Bsquare, declared that customers care most about ROI-driven business outcomes when it comes to their platform selection.

When it came to the technical thoughts, Qualcomm’s Leon Farasati pointed out how a mobile processor such as their Snapdragon product also has applications for IoT and embedded computing. Arrow Electronics’s DJ McLeod and Sierra Wireless’ Gus Vos also discussed one of the hottest topics in the IoT space these days – Low Power Wide Area Technologies (LPWA). Gus illustrated the three “Cs” that you need to consider in your LPWA deployment – cost, coverage, and current, with DJ McLeod adding that lower frequency is ideal.

Following an engaging day of these types of in-depth conversations, Deloitte’s Jamie Sawchuk wrapped up the day perfectly by discussing the age of disruption facing Canadian businesses. According to Jamie, IoT is a major component of the key technology enablers which will drive exponential growth for businesses across the world in the coming years and decades.

In conclusion, the 2016 IoT Roadshow was an incredible success, and would not be possible without the support of our partners Sierra Wireless, Arrow Electronics, Deloitte, Intel, Qualcomm, Infineon, ams AG, and STMicroelectronics. The delicious meals were also a highlight, so we would like to thank Foodee as well for keeping us well-fed.

If you want to be a part of the IoT Roadshow experience, we still have two events planned in the series: our Toronto edition is taking place on May 17 and we will be in Montréal on May 19. Visit our event page to learn more!
